Banana Egg Rolls (Air Fryer)

These banana egg rolls are easy to make and insanely tasty! With just 4 simple ingredients it comes together in minutes and pairs so well with a caramel or chocolate dipping sauce. Plus, my personal favorite part? No actual frying needed as these are made in the air fryer.

I’ve been making dessert egg rolls for awhile now (P.S. these apple egg rolls are another one of my favorites), but it wasn’t until recently that I found out these banana egg rolls are an incredibly popular Filipino snack. Traditionally called Turon, it’s Saba bananas coated with brown sugar, placed in a spring roll wrapper, and deep fried.

Now, these banana egg rolls are a bit different than the traditional version as we are using Cavendish bananas (aka the classic US banana you can find at any supermarket). Plus, instead of spring roll wrappers, we are using egg roll wrappers and air frying instead of deep frying.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS RECIPE

Easy to Make – The switches mentioned above make this recipe super beginner and kid-friendly. I mean…fresh bananas paired with brown sugar and air fried in a crispy egg roll wrapper?! It might just be one of your new favorites!

Simple Ingredients – Just four ingredients are needed to make this delicious sweet treat.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED (WITH SUBSTITUTIONS)

To make these banana egg rolls you will need the following ingredients:

Ripe Bananas: As I mentioned above, we’re using the classic North American banana you can find at your local grocery store. Ripe bananas = sweet bananas, so we want them to be a bit spotty!

Egg Roll Wrappers: To wrap the bananas we need egg roll wrappers (not spring roll wrappers). Egg roll wrappers are a bit thicker than spring roll wrappers and do not need to be soaked in water prior to wrapping.

You can find them at most grocery stores (Target, Walmart, Public, etc), and this is my favorite vegan-friendly brand!

Brown Sugar: Brown sugar is used in this recipe to add a bit of sweetness to the banana egg rolls. You can also use regular cane sugar or coconut sugar, although brown sugar yields the best flavor in my opinion.

Cinnamon: The final ingredient, cinnamon is used to add a sweet, warming note.

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

Making this delicious dessert is so easy, like too easy. As in, you may find yourself making this banana egg roll recipe multiple times a week…if that happens don’t blame me!

And, if you’re looking for an air fryer recommendation…this is my favorite one that I convince all my friends and family to get.

P.S. For ingredient amounts and full instructions on how to make these egg rolls read the recipe card below.

Step One: The first step is to peel the banana and then cut it into 3 sections. Then, cut each section in half lengthwise.

Step Two: On a clean surface, place the egg roll wrapper. Then, add the banana piece and top with brown sugar and cinnamon.

Step Three: Wrap the egg roll, while using water to help ensure it sticks together. For detailed instructions on wrapping the egg roll make sure to read the FAQ section.

Step Four: Spray the air fryer basket with a light coating of nonstick cooking spray. Place egg rolls in a single layer for 4 minutes, then flip and air fry for an additional 3-4 minutes until golden brown. Repeat this process until you have made all the egg rolls.

Step Five: Let cool (hard, but trust me they are HOT!), and serve with your favorite dipping sauce, dust with powdered sugar, or enjoy with vanilla ice cream.

STORAGE & REHEATING

While these egg rolls are best enjoyed fresh, you can store them in an airtight container for 3-4 days. When ready to enjoy, air fry for 2-3 minutes to reheat. Let cool and enjoy!

If you know you are going to save some for later, make sure to put the dipping sauce on the side (if using) so reheating it is easy.

FUN FLAVOR IDEAS:

Chocolate Banana Egg Rolls: Add a few chocolate chips to the filling and it makes the perfect dessert for those who love chocolate.

Peanut Butter Banana Egg Rolls: For this combination, simply add half of a tablespoon of peanut butter to the filling For easy rolling, creamy peanut butter is my recommendation but feel free to experiment with chunky as well.

Coconut Banana Egg Rolls: Add coconut flakes to the filling and serve with whipped coconut cream for the ultimate coconut banana treat!

Banana Caramel Egg Rolls: For those with a sweet tooth, add a little bit of caramel to the inside of the egg roll.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. How Do I Wrap an Egg Roll?

Wrapping an egg roll may seem complicated, but it’s actually surprisingly easy. You can watch a video tutorial here. Or, follow along with the steps below!

Before starting, make sure you have all your ingredients ready and a small bowl of water nearby. Sealing the corners with a bit of water helps to avoid any filling from bursting out. To do this, simply place a dab of water on top of each corner after folding over.

The first step is to lay out the egg roll wrapper on a dry surface. Place the wrapper in a diamond shape and add the filling (in this case the piece of banana) in the center of the wrapper.

Then, roll the bottom corner (the one closest to you) over the filling and press down on the sides to flatten them. Fold the left and right side of the wrapper over towards the middle.

Lastly, continue to roll the wrapper up tightly to form a cylinder and seal the edge of the wrapper with water.

2. What’s the Difference between Egg Roll Wrappers and Spring Roll Wrappers?

Egg roll wrappers are thicker and typically made of flours and eggs (the above brand I recommended is vegan). While spring roll wrappers are much thinner and are typically submerged in water before using – then either deep fried or enjoyed raw.

3. What Should I Pair these Egg Rolls with?

There’s a ton of delicious options you can pair these egg rolls with! While they taste delicious on their own, adding a drizzle of caramel sauce or hot fudge takes them to a whole new level. You can also pair them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Or, simply dust them with a light coating of powdered sugar for an extra hint of sweetness.
