I’ve been drowning in basil these past few weeks and have been including it in just about everything, but my favorite so far? This watermelon basil juice! It’s the perfect cool down drink to enjoy on a warm summer day. While it may be getting close to fall, the weather in Los Angeles right now is screaming summer so I’ll be sipping on this drink until it cools down.

It’s also a great way to rehydrate if you’ve been active – watermelon juice is just as hydrating as sports drinks but tastier and healthier. So whether you’re laying by the pool or going on a hike, pack some of this watermelon basil drink and you’ll be set.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED (WITH SUBSTITUTIONS)

To make this easy watermelon juice you will need the following ingredients:

Ingredients laid out on a wooden board for the watermelon mocktail

Mini Watermelon – Watermelon is the main ingredient here! Because we are turning this into juice, it’s perfectly okay if your watermelon is overripe (i.e. if it seems mushy). For this drink we are using a mini seedless watermelon – which is about the size of a cantaloupe.

Fresh Lime Juice – To add a zesty punch to this juice, we’re adding the juice from one fresh lime. Make sure to use fresh lime juice as it makes a big difference in the flavor.

Basil – Fresh basil leaves add a sweet and savory note with undertones of mint and pepper, but without being as overpowering as the latter.

Agave – Adding a bit of sweetness is optional, but takes this drink to the next level! You can also substitute maple syrup.

Sparking Water – Want to make this watermelon basil drink into a mocktail? Top it off with a bit of sparkling water.

STORAGE & REHEATING

Watermelon juice is best fresh, but you can store it in the fridge for 1-2 days. If storing, I recommend placing extra in a mason jar and giving it a shake before consuming (it will separate in the fridge).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I add alcohol?

Sure! Make this watermelon drink into a cocktail by adding 3-4 oz of your favorite alcohol.

Do I need to to strain the drink?

Nope! There’s no need to strain the juice as it’s already very thin since watermelon is mainly water. You can strain it, but it’s definitely not necessary.
